Destinations >>Carazo
The department of Carazo was created in 1891. Agriculture and cattle ranching dominate its volcanic mesas. The cultivation of citrus fruits and coffee are very important. The city of Carazo is located 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Managua, and to the southeast are the so-called Towns of the Mesa: Jinotepe and Diriamba, also known as the “Twin Cities”. These towns enjoy an excellent climate. They are coffee centers and share the same famous religious and folk festivals. If you have not yet witnessed the dance of the Baile del Toro Guaco, the festivities in honor of San Sebastian and Santiago (St. Sebastian and James), and the El Güegüense dance, you may do so here. In Masatepe, very close to Carazo, you may enjoy delicious tripe soup. You will also find a varied selection of wicker items. In November, the town celebrates the Pineapple and Tangerine Fair. If you like sweets, you will find both quantity and quality here: coconut candies, dulce de leche (a fudge-like confection), dulce de zapoyol (made from the inside of the seed of the zapote or marmalade plum), and peanut candies. Other towns in the department of Carazo are: Santa Teresa, El Rosario, Dolores, La Conquista and La Paz de Carazo. Tourist attractions Historical: The three cities: Diriamba, Jinotepe and San Marcos. The festivals of their respective patron saints (San Sebastian, Santiago and San Marcos). Scenic: The beaches of La Boquita, Huehuete and Tupilapa. Ecological: The Escalante-Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, near El Astillero Bay. Marine turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Carazo. Tower and Dome of San Sebastián On top of the dome of the Basilica of San Sebastian stands a statue of San Sebastian, patron saint of Diriamba, whose feast is celebrated in January. Parish Church of Jinotepe This church is located across from the plaza or central park. It is an elegant building, including its façade and two high towers, and is consecrated to the St. James the Apostle (Santiago), patron saint of the city. |
