Puerto Cabezas is the second most important Nicaraguan port on the Caribbean Sea. It is primarily a fishing town and is located in the extreme northeast of the country. From this city, one can venture where very few foreigners have been, by land toward Waspam to one of the Miskito villages along the Coco River or to explore the beautiful Karata Lagoon. There is no better opportunity to see Puerto Cabezas than to participate in the “Tourist Caravan” held in May. Tourist Attractions: Historical: The Sumu village of Musawas and various Miskito communities along the Coco River. Scenic: The Miskito savannah is an extensive natural park of pine groves. La Poza Azul and Tuapi, the Waspuk River, the rapids on the Coco River and the Miskito Cays. Ecological: The forest of the Bosawas Reserve, which includes Saslaya National Park, provides refuge to species of flora and fauna that are representative of the tropical humid forest. The forests of the Miskito savannah; the manatees of Pahara Lagoon; the coral reefs of the Mískito Cays and the underwater pasture areas where the green turtle feeds. |
