The Archipelago of Solentiname, located in the southeastern part of Lake Nicaragua, near where the San Juan River begins, is made up of 36 beautiful islands. These are like emeralds that adorn the landscape of the archipelago with their dazzling beauty and abundance of life. The primary activity of the residents of Solentiname is painting primitive style artwork, a beautiful and picturesque artistic style. The paintings have reached audiences both within and beyond our borders. A visit must be made to the Island of San Fernando, where most of the artists of the area live. There are also craftspeople that carve objects from wood and paint them in vivid colors: animals from the region such as herons, toucans, sawfish, freshwater turtles and crocodiles. The raw material for these carvings is balsa wood which is light, soft and easy to work. The archipelago has an extensive inventory of wildlife that visitors may observe on guided tours through the islands. Excursions may be arranged to the Los Guatusos Natural Park where you may observe alligators, exotic birds and primates.
