Cailagua Petroglyphs Trail – Masaya

  • Petroglyphs3-Cailagua-Masaya

The Cailagua petroglyphs are part of the artistic expression of the Chorotega people of Monimbó. These ancient engravings carved in stone tell the story and ways of life of the first settlers in this area. On the walls of the natural channel of the Cailagua – an ancient stream that ends in a precipice that leads to the Laguna de Masaya – you can see approximately 50 meters of some 200 expressions carved in stone of zoomorphic bodies, circles, spirals, fauna and flora of that time, which the indigenous people made before the Spanish conquest.

Among vegetation, the sonorous song of birds and enormous stones that are part of the scenic landscape of this place, you can appreciate the panoramic beauty that makes up the Masaya lagoon and the Masaya Volcano National Park.

Access is in very good condition, as a trail route was created, over eight hundred meters long, which includes two suspension bridges, towards the petroglyphs or the Masaya lagoon.

There is no entrance fee to the site, and you can take the tour accompanied by local guides from the Community Center La Vida en Comunidad, Petroglifos del Cailagua.
