The department of Carazo was created in 1891, and on its volcanic plateaus agriculture and livestock farming predominate. Citrus and coffee cultivation are important.

It is located 30 km from Managua, and to the southwest are the so-called Meseta Towns: Jinotepe and Diriamba, also known as the «Twin Cities», which enjoy an excellent climate; they are coffee-growing centers and share the same religious and folkloric festivities, which are very famous. If you have not witnessed the "Baile del toro guaco", the festivities in honor of San Sebastian and Santiago, and the dance of «The Güegüense», you can do it here.

Very close to Carazo is Masatepe, where you can enjoy the delicious tripe soup. You will also find a wide range of wicker products. The Pineapple and Mandarin Fair is also held here in November. If you like sweets, you will find them in quantity and quality in this city: coconut, milk, zapoyol, peanut...

The municipality covers an area of 1,100 km², with a population of 1,200,000 inhabitants.
