Telica volcano
It is located 36km from the municipality of León, and is one of the 6 most attractive volcanoes in Nicaragua, with frequent eruptions that have been observed and commented on since the time of the Spanish Conquest until today. Its last violent eruption was in 1048, and since then it has been expelling smoke and roaring. It has a height at its upper end of a little more than a kilometer (1,061m) and has large craters 120m deep and 700m in diameter. Visited by national and international tourists.
Hervideros of San Jacinto
The Hervideros de San Jacinto, located in the town of the same name, are at the foot of the Telica volcano. They are lava springs very close to the surface that boil when they are full of water. Characteristic of the area are the colored mud (pink and yellow) generated by the activity of the lava which was formerly used to paint houses. If there is enough water, the springs produce small geysers.
Cerro Negro volcano
It is the youngest volcano in Central America (167 years) and the most active in Nicaragua. It measures approximately 728m. It is a cone formed by ash and black sand, hence its name. Its eruptions are generally expulsions of pyroclastic fragments, ash and lava. Its last eruption was in 1999. Its young age and constant activity make it impossible for trees and plants to grow on its sloping, black slopes. Some parts of this volcano are covered by huge rocks and others by fine sand.
Pilas Volcano – The Hole
It is a volcanic complex made up of several structures: the first volcano is called 'El Picachu'; after being active it collapsed forming other volcanic structures, currently, the most significant is the El Hoyo Volcano, which can be distinguished by a hole located on one of its slopes, instead of being located at the top.
Volcano Momotombo
Momotombo, which means “big boiling peak”, rises to 1.297 meters above sea level. It is a relatively young volcano, which after remaining calm since 1886, erupted in 1905 and left a river of lava that, now solidified, is still visible. Its last eruption was on December 2, 2015. The steam from the volcano is used to generate electricity through the facilities of the “Momotombo” geothermal plant. It is a very popular destination for national and foreign tourists who like extreme adventure, since it is possible to climb to its bare summit and even spend the night there. From the edge of the crater you can see a unique and spectacular panorama of the Pacific Ocean.
