Local fauna in Masaya
The Tisma lagoon, part of the Tipitapa River, La Playuela and the Panaloya Pass are segments of the Masaya wetland.

The purpose of wetlands is to preserve the vital element of water, because they are the receivers, regulators and purifiers of the waters that feed underground currents. The Tisma wetland represents a refuge for the conservation of flora and fauna and for the inhabitants who live around it.

One of the attractions of the area is bird watching, mainly during the rainy season, between September and November, where you can see both birds of species that reside in the tropics, as well as migratory species that use the natural resources of the lagoon system for food and shelter.

Laguna-Tisma - Nicaragua

The most emblematic fauna are the aquatic birds, among which you can see herons and ducks, as well as ospreys and hawks.

Fish such as mojarras and guapotes laguneros, in addition to being sought after by the communities, are the base of the food chain for many of the aquatic birds found here. For this reason, the Tisma Laguna System Protected Area and Wildlife Refuge, during the winter, is a natural laboratory where you can learn about the ecology of these species.
