Rural and Community Tourism Circuits

Raccs

The Autonomous Region of the South Caribbean Coast (RACCS) is distinguished by its ethnic diversity and natural wealth. This region is home to ecological and cultural treasures that strengthen its identity and boost its local economy.

Among its natural jewels is the “Hermanos Hodgson Sobalvarro Private Wildlife Reserve (RSPHHS)”, located in the Cerro Silva Nature Reserve in Bluefields. The RSPHHS has an approximate area of 45 Mzs of land which were previously pastures and have now been environmentally restored with forest and fruit species using agroforestry, agrosilvopastoral, silvopastoral, and agrosilvicultural systems. One of the forest species of greatest interest in the RSPHHS is the Mountain Almond, being the most representative flagship species because it is in danger of extinction. This tree symbolizes and dynamizes the life of the wild species existing in the area. In addition, it functions as a refuge for various species of fauna and has a turtle zoo.

In the community of Orinoco, located in the municipality of Laguna de Perlas in the South Caribbean Autonomous Region of Nicaragua, lies a vibrant Garifuna community recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition is due to the preservation of their ancestral traditions, which enrich the national heritage, including their music, dances such as the punta and wanaragua (masked dance or maladi), and their typical cuisine. Orinoco offers visitors authentic community and cultural tourism experiences.

One notable initiative is "Garifuna Secrets of the Jungle," a traditional medicine venture founded by Kensy Sambola and her husband, Matti. This project is based on the ancestral wisdom of the Garifuna people, using raw materials extracted from a productive plot resulting from a reforestation process initiated 18 years ago. The products produced reflect traditional knowledge and a commitment to sustainability and respect for nature.
