Rural and Community Tourism Circuits

Between jungle nature, ancestral culture and sustainable tourism can be seen in towns such as Siuna and Puerto Cabezas (Bilwi).

El Cortez Farm (Siuna)

Located in Siuna, the Finca El Cortez Private Wildlife Reserve stands out for its 31 hectares dedicated to the conservation of the tropical forest. This farm offers a diverse rural ecotourism experience: hiking, birdwatching, camping, and traditional cuisine tasting. With individual covered spaces and a pool, surrounded by trees, it has become a driving force for job creation and community strengthening.

Paradise Beach (Puerto Cabezas)

On the lush North Caribbean Coast, near Puerto Cabezas, Playa Paraíso emerges as a hidden paradise: golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and a peaceful atmosphere ideal for unwinding. Accessible primarily by land through the communities of Sandy Bay, Phara, and Dakura, this beach maintains a community-based tourism offering, where Miskito families share traditions, cuisine, and local hospitality. It's a perfect setting for ecotourism, birdwatching, landscape photography, as well as camping and bonfires on the sand.

These initiatives, one in the heart of the forest (Finca El Cortez) and the other on the paradise coast (Playa Paraíso), reflect the vision of responsible, community-based tourism on the North Caribbean Coast. Both:

  • They boost local economies through direct employment and tourism services managed by the communities themselves.
  • They preserve biodiversity through active conservation of the natural environment.
  • They promote cultural identity by integrating ancestral knowledge, native cuisine, and connections with the Miskito and Sumu ethnic groups.

Overall, the North Caribbean Coast is emerging as a region where natural and cultural wealth translates into unique experiences, promoting a tourism model that honors the land, its roots, and its people.
